New Gender-Friendly Toilets Set Up At Yonghua Civic Center For A Better User Environment

The new toilets in the east wing on the ground floor of the Tainan City Government Yonghua Civic Center building have been completed. The construction project, which includes gender-friendly toilets, accessible toilets, and family-friendly toilets, was launched to meet the needs of different users and provide a more comfortable and accommodating toilet environment that is not divided by gender.

Toilet conditions in governmental buildings have been a focus point of Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che since he took office. Therefore, he lobbied for subsidies from the central government to renovate the old toilets at the Minzhi Civic Center Nanying Hall and added gender-friendly toilets in 2020. In 2023, Huang managed to secure an NTD 1.56 million subsidy from the Ministry of Environment which was then combined with the budget from the local government for the toilet remodeling project in the east wing ground floor of the Yonghua Civic Center building.

The Secretariat pointed out that the renovated multi-purpose gender-friendly toilets have separate stalls (two urinals, four squat toilets, five sitting toilets, one family toilet, and one accessible toilet) and emphasized that the project is not merely a renovation job but features new space designs that present a continuous flow of space and avoid awkwardness when the public is using the toilet. The family toilet includes a changing table and a child toilet, and accessible toilets have a resting bed to create a more inclusive and friendly environment for people of all ages, genders, and different needs.

The Secretariat will continue to carry out toilet renovation projects as well as Tainan City’s unique Luna Period Project (toilets at both civic centers provide free sanitary pads) to create a gender-friendly administrative space while promoting gender mainstreaming and gender equality so that both civic centers can enjoy a high-quality working environment that respects all genders.
