TSMC Mass Produces 3 nm Chips And Expands Fab In Southern Taiwan Science Park, Mayor Hopes This Will Speed Up The City’s Overall Industry Upgrade

On December 29, 2022, TSMC hosted its 3 nm chip mass production and 8th phase fab expansion ceremony at the company’s Fab No. 18 new construction site in Southern Taiwan Science Park. Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che was present to witness this important milestone that signifies TSMC’s accomplishments in advanced processes.

The Mayor announced that Tainan is dedicated to providing the Park with favorable conditions, such as green energy, reclaimed water, and personnel with different levels of skills for plant building, R&D, operations, and administrative work. Huang thanked the involvement and efforts of Tainan’s industries and expects that TSMC will lead Taiwan’s semiconductor industry into a bright future.

Tainan is an important base for the mass production of TSMC’s advanced process chips. Fab No.18, which is located in Southern Taiwan Science Park, is a GIGAFAB® Facility for 5 nm and 3 nm processes. With the establishment of TSMC’s advanced process fab in Tainan, relevant industries including MediaTek and ASML have also set up offices and talent cultivation bases in Tainan. Major semiconductor equipment manufacturers such as Applied Materials and Tokyo Electron Limited (TEL) as well as overseas semiconductor material suppliers Showa Denko and Fujifilm Electronic Materials all have a presence here and will consequently accelerate Tainan’s overall industry upgrading.
