Staying Safe and Warm While Enjoying Tainan's New Year's Eve Concert. Huang Wei-che: Social Distancing Will Keep Everyone Safe

Tainan City Government hosted the New Year’s Eve Concert on December 31 evening. Although there was no live audience, the artists still braved the cold and delivered extraordinary performances, and wished everyone watching online the best for the coming year. Overall, the average number of viewers online was about 20,000.

Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che came up to the stage before Dutch singer Martin Hurkens performed “You Raise Me Up”. Huang pointed out that this year, due to the pandemic, the concert venue was not open to the public and the entire event was live-streamed instead. In other words, this adjustment was an epidemic prevention measure implemented to keep the citizens from getting sick.

Hyoyeon from the K-pop group Girl’s Generation hit the stage at eleven o'clock in the evening, sparking a peak of excitement - online viewer count suddenly skyrocketed and went over 42,000 people. She performed her latest single “DESSERT” and many other dynamic dance tunes. Hyoyeon thanked Tainan City Government for inviting her to Taiwan as this was her only New Year's Eve concert appearance in Taiwan.

Near the end of the concert, the host started to count down the seconds with the online audience. Then Taiwan Swarm Innovation launched 300 drones into the night sky to welcome in the new year with many beautiful patterns such as the city emblem of Tainan, Anping Old Fort, a clock marking the transition from 2020 to 2021, and the new hot check-in spot “Greetings from the Whale”.
