Since starting service in 1926, the Tainan Canal has carried a century’s worth of cultural memory for the city. This year marks the 100th anniversary of its official inauguration. Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che announced that the city government team has mobilized all departments since April to organize a diverse series of exhibitions, performances, and festive events so that everyone can take part in witnessing and experiencing the city’s evolution through the canal.
Tainan has recently honored major historical milestones, including the Tainan 400, Fucheng 300, and the upcoming Canal 100. The Mayor expressed that reaching the 100th anniversary of a canal is a rare and significant life event, and emphasized that canals are not just waterways but also carriers of shared memories across generations. Two years ago, the city government team began coordinating its departments to organize the event series, with the goal of letting all generations form personal emotional connections with the canals as well as Tainan’s deep cultural roots.
This year’s Tainan Canal Centennial Celebration event series features a vibrant blend of waterfront illumination, cultural arts, traditional festivities, and scenic tourism. The Tainan Canal Light Environment Demonstration Project, launched by the Public Works Bureau, officially lit up on April 1. That same weekend, the Economic Development Bureau also opened the Canal Coffee Market, bringing together over a hundred specialty vendors and creating a relaxing waterfront atmosphere.
For cultural performances, the Cultural Affairs Bureau set up a 100-meter-long Water and Light Show installation along the section between Chengtian Bridge and An-ik Bridge, running from April 18 to 26, with nightly scheduled performances that blend light, shadow, and music to transform the canal into a cultural corridor narrating Tainan’s history. On May 16, the Tainan City Symphony Orchestra will hold its spring concert, A Flow of Centennial Melodies, at the Tainan Cultural Center. The piece “Symphonic Poem: Centennial of the Tainan Canal” will be premiered, accompanied by visual presentations that recount stories of the canal. Other events designed to introduce the historical context and significance of the Tainan Canal and the Five Channels Cultural Zone to the public include the “Canal on Screen” Commemorative Exhibition, a series of lectures, and the “Tracing the Five Harbors: Canal Mystery City” Cultural Heritage Stamp-collection Campaign.
In terms of folk and local religious celebrations, the Tainan Mazu Canal Opening Centennial Celebration, hosted by Tainan Grand Mazu Temple with support from the Tainan City Government, will feature a Grand Sea-Land Convergence event on April 11. Deities including the Zhennan Heavenly Mother and King of Pioneers will embark on a boat procession along the canal, recreating the grandeur of a century ago. Furthermore, the 2026 Tainan International Dragon Boat Championships will incorporate fire dance performances and a specialty market, bringing excitement and vitality to the canal area.
The Tainan Canal Centennial Celebration event series will extend from spring through autumn. On May 1-2, the Outdoor Music Festival, organized by the Department of Information and International Relations, will bring music to Guangba Square and the west side of Tainan Spring. The “Canal 100 Twin Cities River Delights” Gourmet Boat Tours will launch in July, and on October 10, the Bureau of Civil Affairs will invite 100 newlywed couples to take part in the Centennial Newlyweds Canal Cruise. In addition, the Canal River Cruise BOT Project Pier, scheduled to open at Guangba Square by the end of November, will further enhance the waterfront tourism experience and drive an overall upgrade in tourism.
