The widely anticipated three-day Pokémon GO Tour: Kalos event kicked off on Feb. 20 at Tainan Metropolitan Park. Data from local telecom companies show that more than 60,000 people participated on the first day, transforming Tainan into a vibrant and interactive “Pokémon habitat”.
Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che was also present to welcome the event back to Tainan with trainers from around the world. Together, they enjoyed the premiere of the nighttime light sculpture show. Huang expressed his warm welcome to Pokémon players from home and abroad, encouraging visitors to also explore the Pharaoh: King of Egypt special exhibition at the Chi Mei Museum, along with Tainan’s historic landmarks and renowned local cuisine.
According to the city’s Bureau of Tourism, this is the second time that Tainan has hosted the Pokémon GO event (the previous one took place in 2018) and the city is honored to celebrate the game’s symbolic 10th anniversary this year. Held during the Lunar New Year holidays, the Pokémon GO Tour brings unique excitement to students returning home and offers international visitors an immersive way to experience Tainan’s distinct charm and culture while catching Pokémon.
This year’s edition invites trainers from around the world to enter the World of Pokémon through three themed AR habitats: Central Village, Coastal Laboratory, and Mountain Manor. The immersive experience also features many large inflatable Pokémon installations and popular photo spots, as well as special in-game encounters, including the world debut of Shiny Diancie and exclusive Pikachu wearing Calem’s or Serena’s hat.
