New AIT Kaohsiung Branch Office Chief Thomas Wong Visits Tainan City Mayor And Discusses Possible Future US-Taiwan Interactions

American Institute in Taiwan Kaohsiung Branch Office (AITK) Chief Thomas Wong visited Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che today (Sep. 26). This is Wong’s first visit to the Tainan City Government since assuming office. He was welcomed by the Mayor and Department of Information and International Relations Director-general Su En-en and both parties talked about US-Taiwan exchanges and interactions.

Mayor Huang welcomed Chief Thomas Wong to his post here in Southern Taiwan and pointed out that Taiwan and the US now have more frequent interactions than before: U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and other high-level US politicians have visited Taiwan, and the US Senate and House of Representatives also proposed Taiwan-friendly acts. Under such circumstances, the Mayor and Tainan City Government look forward to working with Chief Wong and AITK to enhance the connection between Southern Taiwan and the US.

The Mayor also mentioned Second Lieutenant Hu Chia-chi, Taiwan’s second female West Point graduate, is also from Tainan. Since she and Wong are both West Point alumni, he hopes that this connection will create more interaction opportunities between Tainan and the US. Mayor Huang then shared that Tainan has a lot of delicacies and festivals and invited Wong to visit Tainan more often to experience the city’s unique charm.

AITK Branch Office Chief Thomas Wong thanked Mayor Huang for his hospitality and expressed that he looks forward to facilitating more collaborations and interactions between Taiwan and the US.

Chief Thomas Wong assumed office this (2022) August. This is his second term in Taiwan: he served as an AIT Political Section officer in 2017. Wong graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and joined the US Department of State in 2010. He has served at the U.S. Consulate General in Mexico and was the president of the Department of State’s Asian American Foreign Affairs Association from 2014 to 2016.
