ITRI’s Compound Semiconductor Southern Development Base Officially Opens in Tainan, Mayor Hopes Tainan Will Continue To Play Leading Role In Compound Semiconductor Industries

As the world enters the era of electric vehicles, compound semiconductors will become the next area of competition for the emerging technology industries. ITRI’s Compound Semiconductor Southern Development Base, located in Shalun Green Energy Technology Demonstration Site, was officially inaugurated on August 8. The Base is expected to help expand Taiwan’s existing semiconductor industries into the emerging compound semiconductor field.

During the inauguration ceremony, Mayor Huang Wei-che expressed that Tainan is already an industry leader in first-gen si-semiconductors. The third-gen compound semiconductor is crucial in the development of EVs, green energy, and low orbit satellite industries and the Mayor hopes that the establishment of this Base will maintain Tainan’s competitive edge in the R&D, manufacturing, and applications of compound semiconductors.

According to Chen Kai-ling, Director-General of the Economic Development Bureau, the Green Energy Industry Park in Rende District has entered its EA stage and can support the development of innovative technologies in areas such as compound semiconductor, EV, and green energy at the Shalun Green Energy Science City. The collaboration will generate industry clusters and stimulate regional development.

Dai Wei-Jun, Chairperson of the Research, Development and Evaluation Commission, added that since Shalun is located in the central area of the Executive Yuan’s Southern Semiconductor “S” Corridor, Tainan City will play a crucial role in Taiwan’s overall technology industry.
