Dedicated to Building A Gender-Friendly City, Tainan City Government Signs MOU With KNH Enterprise To Continue Luna Period Project

Safeguarding the rights of women and disadvantaged students, Tainan City Government continues the Luna Period Project this year with support from private enterprises. Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che and KNH Enterprise Chairman Dai Rong-Ji signed the MOU for Tainan City Government’s Luna Period Campus Project on Jan. 20 in the 6F Briefing Room at Yonghua Civic Center.

The Mayor expressed that all teens should have access to basic period products. In 2021, Tainan became the first city in Taiwan to roll out the Luna Period Project. This year (2022) the government officially signed a contract with KNH Enterprise. The public and private sectors will join hands to support disadvantaged students as they go through puberty and experience different changes in their bodies. Huang hoped that the signing will boost more public awareness on gender equality. He also expected to attract more enterprises to join in and support disadvantaged groups in society and eventually transform Tainan into a gender-friendly, livable city.

Tainan City Government Bureau of Education Director-general Cheng Hsin-hui explained that this project supplies free period products to disadvantaged students. In addition, health centers on campus will also have period products where students can access them for free if needed. Furthermore, the Bureau of Education included topics related to body changes during puberty into school curricula and invited NPO Little Red Hood to give talks to increase the students’ awareness of gender equality. Hopefully, these actions will eliminate period stigma and create a gender-friendly campus.

The signing of the Luna Period Campus Project MOU with KNH Enterprise helps schools obtain period products from KNH Enterprise at a lower price. The new collaboration also allows more students to be included in the Luna Period Project: last year (2021) 692 students from low-income and middle-low-income households benefited from the project and the number is expected to reach 2,188 students this year.
